Kelsey Plum sends powerful message for Sparks after stunning Mercury trade

Kelsey Plum only had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Sparks, but she probably collected a bunch of unforgettable memories with them. Plum will start a new chapter with the Phoenix Mercury after the Sparks shipped her on Saturday.

Los Angeles acquired Plum in 2024 via a three-way trade with the Las Vegas Aces and the Seattle Storm. In April, she re-signed with the Sparks on a one-year contract worth nearly $1 million.

Her short stay in Los Angeles may not have panned out, but the 31-year-old guard was appreciative of the memorable experience, penning a heartfelt message on Instagram.

“Los Angeles! Thank you for embracing me these last two years. You made this city feel like home.
To the Sparks organization, my teammates, coaches, and the fans, thank you for everything. I’ll always be grateful for my time here,” said Plum.

“Phoenix, I can’t wait to get to The Valley. Let’s get it!”

In 55 games with the Sparks, Plum averaged 20.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.2 steals. In June, she dropped a career-high 43 points on 14-of-026 shooting in their win against, incidentally, the Mercury. She has been limited to 12 games this season due to an ankle injury and a leg injury.

Her leg injury has sidelined her for over a month, although she could make her debut for the Mercury on Monday.

Los Angeles received Monique Akoa Makani, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick in exchange for the five-time All-Star.

The Sparks are trying to regain their footing after stumbling to a 3-9 record in their last 12 games.
