Michael Thorbjornsen wins first PGA Tour title with dominant Sunday at Rocket Classic

Michael Thorbjornsen knew he had a strong chance to get a breakthrough win on Sunday after noticing his momentum after the 14th hole. So he made sure that it would not go for naught. Thorbjornsen ruled the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club to capture his first title on the PGA Tour.

He finished with a 7-under 63 to win the title by two shots. He became the eighth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and the second straight after Jackson Koivun in the 3M Open at the TPC Twin Cities last week, as noted by the Associated Press.

The 24-year-old Thorbjornsen, who was four strokes behind Davis Riley at the start of the final round, sank a 26-foot birdie on the last hole to seal his seminal moment. Xander Schauffele finished as the runner-up, while Riley settled for third place.

Thorbjornsen was in disbelief over his latest accolade.

“If you go to my 10-year-old self and you tell him (he will play) on the PGA Tour at 24 years old, I don’t think he would care if I had won or how well I’m doing,” said Thorbjornsen in the report from Yahoo! Sports’ Kara Adams.

“I think just, first off, getting here is a big accomplishment. This (title) is just like icing on the cake. I feel like I’ve put myself in this position a few times now. I obviously haven’t been able to get it done, but I mean, try, try, and try again, and hopefully, the outcome is a little different.”

It took him 65 tries to finally win on the PGA Tour, and it was exactly his resolve that allowed him to reach the top. The former Stanford standout stressed that he has learned a lot from other great players along the way.

Thorbjornsen registered the biggest final-round rally in the Rocket Classic since Bryson DeChambeau clawed back from a three-stroke deficit in 2020.
