Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer takes glass-half-full approach to trade deadline uncertainty

The Toronto Blue Jays have begun selling at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, with Kevin Gausman heading to the Chicago Cubs. However, there may be more moves to come from the Blue Jays before Monday’s deadline. This includes a potential trade involving future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer.

Whether Scherzer moves before 6 pm Monday remains to be seen. If it happens, that is something the veteran pitcher will live with. If it doesn’t, though, that is an outcome he can certainly live with.

“We’re getting 40,000 fans a night. We want to go out there and play. We’re only a few games out of the Wild Card and anything can happen. We’re a good team,” the Blue Jays starter said, via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

Toronto has not had the success it envisioned after winning the American League pennant last season. As things stand, Toronto is dead last in the AL East with a 52-60 record. They are four and a half games back of the final AL Wild Card spot, as well.

A trade involving Scherzer may be a bit difficult considering his performance this year. He has only pitched 24 innings and has recorded a dreadful 9.49 ERA in that span. In saying this, he did pitch to a 3.77 ERA in three playoff games last year. That could be of interest to teams looking for rotation depth down the stretch.

Scherzer’s legacy is secure no matter what happens on Monday. If he moves, he has one more chance to contend for the World Series before calling it a career. If he remains in Toronto, though, it sounds like that is more than okay with him.
