Mets signing vet OF after brutal 9-18 start to 2026 season

The New York Mets are off to a brutal start in the 2026 season. The Mets have been swept by the Colorado Rockies, as the offense was able to score just four runs over three games.

Now, the Mets are looking to add a little boost to the lineup and have added a veteran outfielder to help with the cause, per Will Sammon of The Athletic.

“The Mets and outfielder Austin Slater are in agreement on a deal, league source tells The Athletic,” Sammon posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Slater began his career with the San Francisco Giants. He was drafted in the 44th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but did not sign. He would go on to play at Stanford, and then was selected in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Giants. Slater would make his MLB debut in 2017 with the Giants, staying with the franchise into the 2024 season.

Slater would be traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2024, and then again, after eight games, to the Baltimore Orioles. After the 2024 season, he signed a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox, but injuries limited ot just 51 total games that year. The White Sox then traded him in the middle of the year to the New York Yankees, where he played in just 14 games, hitting .120.

This past offseason, he signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers, but did not make the big league squad and was released. He then signed with the Miami Marlins. In 12 games, he hit just .172 with one RBI and one run scored, leading to him once again being placed on waivers.

Now, he is with the New York Mets. Slater is a lifetime .247 hitter with 45 home runs and 185 RBIs.
