Mets set to make huge Francisco Alvarez roster move before Cardinals game

When New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez suffered a torn meniscus, he was originally given a six-to-eight week timetable. However, he has made his return much quicker than expected.

The Mets activated Alvarez off the injured list on Tuesday, the team announced. In turn, Hayden Senger was optioned to Triple-A. Will Sammon of the Athletic was first to report the news.

Alvarez appeared in 37 games before suffering his injury, hitting .241 with four home runs and 10 RBIs. After his rehab assignment, the backstop is now ready to try and improve on those numbers.

He has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his five-year MLB career, including 25 home runs and 63 RBIs in 2023. However, he has failed to live up to those numbers since hitting 11 home runs in 2024 and 2025 with 47 and 32 RBIs respectively. Overall, Alvarez has hit .231 with 52 home runs and 153 RBis over his 341 games in New York.

The Mets are at least hopeful he will add an extra spark to their lineup as they enter their series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The franchise picked up a victory on Sunday and series win over the San Diego Padres. But they’re still 15.5 games back of the NL East lead and five games out of a Wild Card spot with their 29-36 record.

Alvarez won’t suddenly turn the Mets into world beaters, but he gives the team another potent bat in their lineup. New York will be cautious with the backstop based on how quick he returned from injury. But at least on Tuesday, he is behind the plate and ninth against the Cardinals.
