Mets rumors: Albert Pujols wants New York manager job after Carlos Mendoza firing

The New York Mets dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday. The Mets are already being linked to candidates who could potentially replace Mendoza. One potential candidate could be former MLB superstar Albert Pujols, who is rumored to be interested in the job.

“Heard from a source today that Albert Pujols in recent weeks had let friends know he’d very much want the Mets’ manager job if and when they moved on from Mendoza. Pujols managed DR team in WBC, has a very strong relationship with Soto,” John Harper of SNY reported.

Pujols has never managed in MLB, but he did coach during the World Baseball Classic as mentioned. Regardless of his coaching experience, Pujols — who is fourth all-time in home runs in MLB with 703 — would have respect in the clubhouse. Players know how much success Pujols found on the field, and they would surely be excited about the idea of playing for him.

Of course, being a good player does not always mean you will be a good manager at the MLB level. Pujols has displayed managing prowess, though. Coaching in New York brings no shortage of pressure, but Pujols will surely be ready for that as well if he does end up landing the Mets coaching job.

New York will certainly not rush to hire a new manager. Andy Green is the current interim manager following Mendoza’s firing. He will attempt to help the Mets turn their season around. New York likely won’t hire a new full-time manager until the offseason.
