Mets’ Juan Soto gets ‘best player in baseball’ nod from Andy Green
Juan Soto earned praise from interim manager Andy Green following his strong performance in the New York Mets’ 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.
Soto is going through the ninth year of his career in the majors, his second with the Mets. He stands out as one of the best hitters in the league, trying to help New York recover from its slow start to the 2026 season.
Green took over the reins as interim manager following the franchise’s decision to fire Carlos Mendoza. He obtained the first win of his stint, seeing Soto assist him by going 2-for-3 in his at-bats for one RBI and one walk. The interim coach reflected on the star hitter’s performance after the game.
“He’s the best player in baseball. It’s special what he does in the batter’s box. Triples probably aren’t the thing that we’re going to see all day long from him, but his every at-bat is must-watch TV, because it’s just that good to watch the professional at-bats. I mean, it gets a really tough lefty from a really weird slot, and you can see he’s getting comfortable and shuffling in there and finding his way. It’s fun to watch, so whatever the situation is, when you have players that’s special, it’s fun,” Green said.

How Juan Soto, Mets played against Phillies
It’s a bold statement for Andy Green to make about Juan Soto’s star talent. But if the Mets are to get back on track and make a run for a playoff berth, Soto is going to play a major role in that case.
New York improved to a 35-48 record on the season but remain at the bottom of the NL East Division standings. They are behind the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins at the moment.
The Mets will look forward to competing for the series win over their division rival. Game 3 against the Phillies will take place on June 28 at 1:40 p.m. ET.
