49ers news: SF bans 2 players after wild joint practice with Titans

NFL joint practices are infamous for short tempers, but the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans took things to a whole new level on Tuesday. During their first joint practice in Santa Clara ahead of Thursday’s preseason matchup, it took virtually no time for the gloves to drop.

Within the first 10 minutes of 11-on-11 drills, four separate scuffles broke out between the 49ers’ defense and the Titans’ offense.

The chaos started on the very first scrimmage play when San Francisco cornerback Renardo Green aggressively threw Tennessee wide receiver Carnell Tate to the ground near the sideline. That physical hit immediately cleared the benches and sparked a massive pileup of shoving and yelling.

The intensity only skyrocketed from there, resulting in four overall ejections. Titans offensive tackles Austin Deculus and Dan Moore Jr. were kicked out of practice for throwing punches, via Vincent Bonsignore of the New York Post. Meanwhile, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed two of his defensive players were also banned from the remainder of the session for their roles in the brawls, though he did not publicly name them.

Things got so out of hand that San Francisco All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner had to step in and act as the peacemaker. Warner gathered his defensive unit and delivered a stern message to de-escalate the situation.

Once tempers cooled, the teams managed to settle in and complete a productive scrimmage. The 49ers’ defense continued to swarm the football, with defensive back Jakob Robinson snagging an interception off Titans quarterback Will Levis.

The practice also served as a reunion for Shanahan and Titans head coach Robert Saleh, who spent last season as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator. Fans can expect to see more of this fiery energy when these two teams clash in their preseason opener.
