Rams’ Trent McDuffie gets real about potential Myles Garrett-Aaron Donald combo

Trent McDuffie was crushed after being traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams back in march. He helped build a dynasty in KC, so emotions were bound to surface. Joining a team that got even better after nearly advancing to the Super Bowl last season certainly helps with the grieving process, however. Now, the star cornerback is completely dedicated to getting the Lombardi Trophy back to LA.

His job could be easier if Aaron Donald lines up alongside Myles Garrett on the defensive line. Like most Rams fans, McDuffie cannot help but imagine the potential carnage those two all-time greats could leave in their wake this season. The 2023 First-Team All-Pro and 2024 Second-Team All-Pro attempted to put himself in the offense’s shoes, but he could not envision a plausible way to stop this possible duo.

“I even try to think of it {from the offense’s perspective},” McDuffie told “The Rich Eisen Show,” per the NFL on ESPN X account. “And talking to {Matthew Stafford}, I’m like ‘how are you guys even gonna do your blocking schemes. Who are you gonna slide to, who are you gonna try to double team? What problems does Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett {cause for} the offense?’ And {Stafford and Sean McVay} are both just like ‘we don’t even know.’

McDuffie already prides himself on giving pass-rushers more time to win their matchup in the trenches, but he will be especially motivated to help out this terrifying tandem. Donald has yet to formally come out of retirement and rejoin the Rams, but he is preparing his body for NFL competition. While a 30-month layoff is bound to create challenges, the eight-time First-Team All-Pro defensive tackle is still an intimidating presence.

Besides, he does not need to operate at full force. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year should be able to carry a massive workload all on his own. Aaron Donald would be a glorious bonus for a Myles Garrett-led defense that is already an elite unit on paper. While those powerhouses push around offensive linemen up front, Trent McDuffie will do his best to dominate downfield.

The two-time Super Bowl champion is a versatile weapon who can make a game-changing impact in coverage, on run defense and as a blitzer. If Garrett and Donald join forces, he could see a multitude of rushed throws and errant passes come his way. Those who are tasked with scoring on this defense better ask for a raise, because sleepless nights lie ahead.
