Titans’ Carnell Tate drops ‘violent’ take after heated joint practice with 49ers

It was supposed to be a friendly practice for the Tennessee Titans and the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. But it was anything but that.

Right on the first play of the 11-on-11 drills at the SAP Performance Facility in California, the Titans and the 49ers got into a scuffle, with Carnell Tate being thrown to the ground by Renardo Green. Tate did not appreciate it and went at Green, leading to a heated pile of both teams.

The tension continued, with Austin Deculus and Dan Moore Jr. getting kicked out for throwing punches, according to a report from the Associated Press’ Josh Dubow.

“San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan, who was mostly watching his offense on the other field, said he was told two of his defensive players also got kicked out,” added Dubow.

After the joint practice, Tate issued a stern remark, denying that it was a “reality check.”

“We went out there and proved to them who we are,” said Tate in the media conference. “We’re the Titans. We came here to play fast and violent.”

Tennessee and San Francisco will meet again on Thursday in a preseason clash. Last season, the 49ers defeated the Titans, 37-24, in Week 15.

Cedric Gray echoed Tate’s strong comment, although he was more even-keeled.

“It’s part of a joint practice. You got to love it. I think we all just wanted to come out here, be a little feisty,” said Gray in the report of Dubow.

“It was just good to get out here and kind of have that and just create those dog moments and those team fighting moments.”
