Mets’ Jorge Polanco shares encouraging update on Achilles injury

Jorge Polanco has been dealing with an Achilles injury since the second game of the regular season. While the New York Mets’ slugger has continued to appear in games since then, he has not fully recovered from the injury just yet. On Friday, Polanco provided an encouraging update regarding his status.

The 32-year-old infielder claims that his Achilles feels better than it had before, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Polanco seems confident that he is making progress and thinks he can avoid a trip to the IL.

“Jorge Polanco said his Achilles is feeling better, despite his absence from today’s lineup,” reported DiComo. “Polanco doesn’t believe he’ll need an IL stint.”

Although Polanco feels good, the Mets are benching him in Friday’s contest against the Athletics. This will be his second straight missed game after being scratched from the lineup in New York’s 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

The 13-year veteran has appeared in 10 out of 13 games this season for the Mets. When available, Polanco has recorded eight hits and one RBI, giving him a .200 batting average and a .289 OBP. He has mainly played designated hitter for New York, while playing two games at first base.

Jorge Polanco joined the Mets in the offseason after signing a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason. He signed that deal after having a stellar 2025 campaign with the Seattle Mariners, where he owned a .265 batting average and .326 OBP with 125 hits, 25 home runs, and 78 RBIs.

Polanco’s next chance to play will come on Sunday. The Mets are scheduled to take on the Athletics at 4:10 p.m. EST for the second contest of a three-game series.
