Matthias Jaissle gives firm response to ex-Man United star’s cheeky jibe over club’s interest in Newcastle star

Matthias Jaissle has shut down the prospect of another Newcastle United star leaving the club this summer.

The Magpies have already seen three key men leave St. James’ Park during the current transfer window.

Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all departed since the end of last season.

Despite the squad overhaul, Jaissle’s side were moments away from claiming all three points against Liverpool in their season opener.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s 99th minute penalty rescued a point for the Reds on Sunday.

Jaissle on Hall interest

Following the match, the Newcastle boss had an emphatic response when asked about potential transfer interest in another of his players.

Jaissle spoke to Viaplay during their post-match coverage of the opening weekend fixture.

Discussing the closing days of the transfer window, he admitted: “I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director. We have some needs, definitely.”

He added: “If you’re bringing players in, maybe there will also be some players out.”

This prompted former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel to reference his old club’s interest in Lewis Hall.

Schmeichel quipped: “We are looking at your left-back.”

Jaissle immediately replied: “No chance, no chance.”

Hall’s future

The Red Devils have been long-term admirers of Hall as they look to strengthen at left-back.

However, Newcastle are keen to tie the 21-year-old down to a new contract.

Hall’s current deal has three years remaining following his permanent move from Chelsea in 2024.

The England international played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool.

It was his challenge on Victor Munoz which handed the visitors their stoppage time penalty, though.

This summer’s Premier League transfer window closes on Tuesday, September 1 at 11pm.

Ahead of the deadline, Newcastle will return to action in the Carabao Cup this week.

The 2025 winners host West Brom on Wednesday night before visiting Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.
