Mets’ Bo Bichette has been awful, but here’s proof he has also been insanely unlucky

Through his first 46 games with the New York Mets, infielder Bo Bichette has not lived up to his $126 million contract. However, some of his struggles may not be all Bichette’s fault.

The infielder has been one of the most unlucky hitters in baseball to start the season. Both Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic and Mark Simon of Sports Info Solutions have pointed out just how unlucky Bichette has been.

“Entering Sunday, the 67-point drop from Bichette’s .277 expected batting average to his actual .210 mark was the fifth largest in the league among hitters with a minimum of 150 plate appearances,” Rosenthal wrote. “The 127 point drop from his expected .398 slugging percentage to his actual .271 mark was the second largest.”

“Sports Info Solutions offers another way to measure Bichette’s poor luck, citing the number of Good Fielding Plays against him,” he continued. “As SIS’ Mark Simon wrote, “Good Fielding Plays vary in nature but share the common thread of a play requiring extra effort that netted a positive consequence.” Entering Sunday, Bichette led the majors with 14 such plays against him. He had only eight all of last season.”

If Bichette has truly been unlucky, then it seems reasonable to expect his fortune to change at some point. The law of averages isn’t real so perhaps the infielder stays downtrodden. If so though, it would be considered a truly devastating season.

Ultimately though, Bichette needs to find himself at the plate. He is hitting .210 with two home runs, 18 RBIs and a stolen bases through his first 46 games. The infielder is at least well aware of the struggles and is committed to improving. New York is at least hoping Bichette walks into some luck.
