Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy’s wife Mia gave blessing to return to KC after shooting
Last week, after a two-week absence, Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to Chiefs training camp after his wife, Mia, was shot by their son.
In his first comments since the shooting (via Nate Taylor), Bieniemy said that his wife gave him her blessing to go back to the team. He had left training camp to tend to his wife, who was hospitalized in Virginia following the incident.
“She is on the road to recovery,” Bieniemy said of his wife. She is doing great. She’s truly a soldier and a saint, and it’s been incredible to watch.”
He noted that it felt “good to be back” after the shooting, which he called part of “unfortunate circumstances.” Bieniemy also said he was able to focus on practices from afar once “things kind of settled.”

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, Bieniemy’s wife was shot by their 27-year-old son in their home in Ashburn, Virginia. She was later hospitalized.
Bieniemy would return home to tend to his wife. The Chiefs gave him an extended leave, and he would return a couple of weeks later to training camp.
A brief hearing was held on Thursday, July 30, with his son, Elijah. He was granted the ability to undergo a competency evaluation.
The Chiefs are hoping for an offensive rebound in 2026 under Bieniemy. He returns to the team after previously having a near decade-long tenure with the Chiefs from 2013 to 2022. He started as their running backs coach before becoming offensive coordinator in 2018. Bieniemy coached Patrick Mahomes to two NFL MVPs. Mahomes is coming off a torn ACL suffered in December 2025. Hopefully, Bieniemy can bring him back to form.
After leaving the Chiefs, Bieniemy coached for the Washington Commanders, UCLA, and the Chicago Bears in various roles, ranging from being a running backs coach to assistant head coach.
