MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills signs five-year extension

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has extended commissioner Sonja Stills for five years, per a statement released by the conference. This comes weeks after MEAC Media Day and ahead of the football season, which starts with the MEAC-SWAC Challenge featuring Howard University.

“I am honored by the continued trust and confidence of our Presidents and Chancellors,” said Stills in the statement. “Everything we have accomplished reflects the dedication and partnership of our member institutions, coaches, administrators and student-athletes. I look forward to continuing that work as we strengthen the conference, embrace new opportunities, and build a foundation for continued success across the MEAC.”

“Commissioner Stills has been a steadfast advocate for our student-athletes, championing excellence not only in competition but also in academics, leadership, and personal development,” said Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, president of Norfolk State University. “Her collaborative approach, strategic vision, and dedication to elevating the MEAC have strengthened our conference and reinforced its proud tradition of excellence. In an interview with The Pivot during MEAC Media Day, Stills gave a glimpse into her leadership style.

“When you talk about leadership, it’s more about managing people. You manage your staff, but you also have your presidents, the athletic administrators, athletic directors, senior administrators and faculty athletic representatives. We always say you have to lead up, down and side to side.”

She also spoke about establishing partnerships to strengthen the conference.

“It’s about managing people and building relationships with corporate partners, making sure that people are comfortable and excited about giving to the conference and helping us elevate. Building relationships is a big part of that.”
