Insider brings focus on glaring LeBron James obstacle with 76ers in 2026

All eyes will be on the Philadelphia 76ers in the upcoming season after their productive summer that saw them acquire LeBron James in free agency and Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics, instantly making them the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.

James and Brown know what it takes to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy, something the 76ers have not done since 1983. The 41-year-old James, in particular, is looking for his fifth ring, and he felt Philadelphia could give him the best shot of attaining it.

His load is expected to lessen with the 76ers, which could help him preserve his energy for the playoffs. ESPN’s Vince Goodwill stressed that staying healthy might be the main issue with the four-time MVP in his latest chapter.

“Aside from the load management of Joel Embiid, LeBron James is going to be 42 years old. You cannot expect to run LeBron out there for 82 games in the season,” said Goodwill.

For perspective, when James entered the NBA in 2003, VJ Edgecombe was not even born yet.

James missed 22 games last season due to a sciatica flare-up, an elbow contusion, and foot arthritis.

With Brown, Embiid, Edgecombe, and Tyrese Maxey by his side, the 22-time All-Star could take a back seat and be the facilitator. Goodwill noted that the 76ers will have to figure out specific roles to make their star-studded core work.

“I’ve been talking to executives and coaches over the past week or so and asking them what they think Philadelphia’s issues are going to be, at least relative to the New York Knicks, the NBA champs, and they said chemistry is going to be a big thing. Sacrifice is another thing, and who’s going to defend arguably is the biggest thing for that starting five,” said Goodwill.
