A’ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark Power Gatorade’s Women’s Science Push
A’ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark headline a powerful group of athletes supporting a Gatorade research commitment whose first results carry particular importance for women’s basketball, per Pepsico.
Wilson and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone appear in the launch film for “Body of Science,” while Clark joins Paige Bueckers, Candace Parker, JuJu Watkins and several other Gatorade athletes connected to the project. Venus Williams serves as its first ambassador.
The multi-year global initiative addresses how little researchers know about women’s hydration and nutrition. According to Gatorade, studies centered solely on women account for just 6% of sports science research.
Basketball Finding Gives Initiative Immediate Weight
The opening data produced a striking result for a campaign featuring Wilson, Clark and other basketball stars. Among every sport measured, basketball players lost the most sodium during training.
Researchers also identified a fueling issue across the broader group of female athletes. Fifty-seven percent failed to consume enough carbohydrates during workouts to support their performance. Half consumed no carbohydrates at all.
Those figures give the star-powered campaign substance beyond its recognizable lineup. Wilson, Clark and their fellow athletes can bring attention to the project, but the findings show what Gatorade wants the science to address: sport-specific demands and common nutrition gaps that broad recommendations may miss.
GSSI, Gatorade’s research division, leads “Body of Science” with four decades of experience studying human performance. Its work will explore women’s needs during critical periods and life stages rather than relying on research built primarily around men.
The athlete roster creates the spotlight. The early evidence supplies the reason to look closer, particularly in basketball, where sodium losses ranked above every other sport included in the study.
