Phillies’ Don Mattingly reveals lineup strategy after Luis Arráez addition

The Philadelphia Phillies are attempting to go on a deep playoff run and acquired Luis Arraez at the trade deadline to help do so. Now, the infielder is set to make his Phillies debut on Tuesday.

He will be batting fourth and playing second base. Interim manager Don Mattingly had a number of different ideas on how the lineup could’ve shaken out. But in any order, he remains confident in Philadelphia’s top four, via Dave Uram of 94WIP.

“Not easily, really. I didn’t know which way to go with it,” Mattingly said. “I don’t think I can really mess it up either way. But for now, that’s where we’re going to start.”

If he were to make a change at the top of the order, Mattingly admits Arraez and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who is batting leadoff, would be flip-flopped. Down the road, that change can still occur. Mattingly first wants to see how things play out as currently constructed before making any necessary changes.

Wherever his spot may be, the Phillies know the need Arraez’s bat in the lineup regardless. Over his first 105 games with the Giants, the infielder hit a National League-leading .324 with four home runs, 43 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Arraez earned the fourth All-Star nomination of his career. Furthermore, he comes to Philadelphia with three batting titles and two Silver Sluggers to his name.

Mattingly will have plenty of decisions to make with the lineup moving forward. How the Phillies fare against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday will help inform his decision.
