Matt Miller mocks QB ‘reach’ to Cardinals after Rams pull Ty Simpson shocker
The Arizona Cardinals rolled the dice on a running back with the No. 3 overall pick, and they didn’t pull off a big trade. Therefore, Matt Miller of ESPN mocked a quarterback reach to the Cardinals after the Rams pulled the Ty Simpson shocker.
With the 13th overall pick in the draft, the Los Angeles Rams select: Ty Simpson. Hearts sank across the Cardinals’ war room. Whatever plans the Cardinals had to get Simpson later in the first round disappeared in the blink of an eye.
But not to fear! Miller has a solution! And it’s …. Carson Beck.
“Is this a reach for Beck?” Miller wrote. “It is, based on predraft rankings of him. But the Cardinals are in quarterback purgatory and need to take swings to find a capable starter. Beck’s excellent play in the College Football Playoff changed the narrative on him. And there are believers around the NFL in his ability as a future starter.”
Would QB Carson Beck fit with the Cardinals?
He may have to. The current quarterback room has Jacoby Brissett in the forefront, with Gardner Minshew providing backup. Neither of those guys is the future.
So is Beck the best available at pick No. 34? He is, according to NFL.com. Beck rates at 6.14, ahead of Garrett Nussmeier and Taylen Green. Beck is right at 6-foot-5 and weighs 233 pounds. So size is not an issue.
“Beck has NFL-caliber size and a lot of experience playing in high-leverage games,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “He recovered from 2024 UCL surgery on his throwing elbow, but he appeared to lose some drive velocity on deep balls and move throws.
“He works through progressions at a good pace and can throw with anticipation. But he loses track of safeties, throwing into hazardous spots. Beck’s decision-making showed more maturity in his final college season, but pressure can pull him back into old habits.”
Is he a franchise quarterback? Zierlein doesn’t exactly endorse that.
“Beck projects as a good backup with the potential to earn a starting job down the road, but he must continue developing game-managing instincts,” Zierlein wrote.
