Marlins lose pitcher to injured list before Mets game

The Miami Marlins have placed right-hander Eury Perez on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 28, after imaging confirmed a right gracilis strain in his inner thigh, with an expected recovery timeline of eight weeks.

Perez’s injury occurred after his start against the Toronto Blue Jays, where he pitched four scoreless innings and recorded a season-high nine strikeouts in a 2-1 loss on Wednesday. During the outing, he also threw a 101 mph four-seam fastball, the second-fastest pitch of his career, in a strikeout of Jesus Sanchez over a 73-pitch performance. Pere did not return for the fifth inning and was later seen experiencing severe discomfort in the dugout, rated initially as 10 out of 10 pain before improving to 7 out of 10, and was helped down the tunnel by Sandy Alcantara. Testing on Thursday’s off day confirmed the strain.

In response, the Marlins recalled right-handed reliever Josh Ekness and reinstated infielder Leo Jimenez from the seven-day concussion-related injured list while optioning infielder Graham Pauley.

Perez, who holds a 4.60 ERA this season and was coming off back-to-back impressive starts, is in his first full year back from April 2024 elbow surgery. His absence further weakens a rotation that has faced repeated setbacks. Miami traded Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers during the offseason and began the year with Pérez, Sandy Alcantara, Max Meyer, Chris Paddack, and Janson Junk as the primary rotation group, with Braxton Garrett, Robby Snelling, and Thomas White in the minors.

Since then, Chris Paddack was designated for assignment and joined the Cincinnati Reds. Robby Snelling made a short MLB appearance before undergoing season-ending internal brace surgery after a UCL sprain. Braxton Garrett was called up but was later optioned after limited effectiveness, including 4 1/3 innings with seven earned runs allowed in one stretch and two runs over four frames in a Thursday outing.

With Perez out, the Marlins will lean on internal replacements and bullpen conversions, including Tyler Phillips. The rotation currently features Max Meyer, Janson Junk, and Sandy Alcantara in the near term.
