Marina Mabrey gets worrisome injury update from Sandy Brondello
The Toronto Tempo were hit with a double whammy on Sunday when head coach Sandy Brondello revealed that both Brittney Sykes and Aneesah Morrow would miss the remainder of the season due to injury. But the hits might not end there. During the same press conference, Brondello also hinted that All-Star guard Marina Mabrey’s status for the rest of the year is also in doubt due to injury.
Marina Mabrey suffered a hamstring injury earlier this week, and she missed her third straight game when the Tempo faced off against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday. Sandy Brondello, who is in her first season as Tempo head coach amid their inaugural year, acknowledged that Mabrey will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks, likely during the season break for the FIBA World Cup.
The Tempo have seven games left on their regular season schedule, and they have already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention after their loss to the Washington Mystics last Thursday. Coming into the game against the Aces, the Tempo had recently snapped a 12-game losing streak after defeating the Portland Fire on Friday.
Mabrey was named to her first All-Star selection amid a career season, and prior to the injury she had appeared in 32 games at a little over 29 minutes per game. She was averaging a career-best 20.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists with splits of 44.1 percent shooting from the field, 38.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 88.1 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
The former second-round pick tied the WNBA record for most points scored in a single game with 53 back on June 25 against the Los Angeles Sparks.
