Malachi Toney makes history in Miami debut vs. Stanford

The Miami (FL) football team got a massive win on Friday over Stanford. Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney was unstoppable, posting 234 receiving yards and three touchdowns. It was a record-breaking night for Toney.

“He sets the (Miami) program record for receiving yards in a single game,” FOX College Football reported on X, formerly Twitter.

Miami defeated Stanford, 45-6. Toney’s final stats were 12 receptions, for 234 yards and the three scores. One of his touchdowns was a 47-yard strike that was picture-perfect.

“His skill set really fits what we do,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said, per ESPN. “His ability to read the field and his ability to digest concepts and to continue to evolve is really, really impressive. Sky’s the limit.”

Toney was honored to be able to shatter that record. He was playing on Friday in front of another great Miami receiver. Former Hurricanes legend Michael Irvin was in attendance at the game.

“It means a lot, knowing how many greats played at this university,” Toney said.

During the 2025 season, Toney posted 1,211 receiving yards for Miami. He also caught 10 touchdown passes. Miami fans hope that Toney’s game against Stanford is a sign of more great things to come.

Toney spent some time with those fans after the game.

“Them fans traveling six hours,” Toney said, “I just wanted to at least let them feel me, touch my hand.”

Miami is looking to return to the national championship game this season. The Hurricanes made the College Football Playoff in 2025, where they went on a run to the title game. Miami ended up losing that game to Indiana.

The Hurricanes next play Florida A&M on September 10. Following the win on Friday, Miami improves to 1-0 on the season. The Hurricanes are also 1-0 now in ACC games.
