Lou Williams reveals why he would have loved to play for Dan Hurley

Lou Williams played in a College Basketball Recruiting era when players can skip college for the NBA. He ultimately chose the league during a time Jim Calhoun led UConn basketball. Yet the former 2005 five-star prospect has become impressed by this Huskies team under Dan Hurley.

To the point Williams admits he would’ve loved to play for the national title winner.

The past NBA Sixth Man winner revealed his admiration for the Huskies leader during this Final Four run. Which he shared on Run it Back Monday before Hurley leads UConn against Michigan.

“Coach Hurley has made me a big fan. Any coach that puts his forehead on a referee’s forehead and nothing happens…I love it,” Williams said. “I would’ve played for him.”

Williams originally appeared to be heading to Georgia out of South Gwinnett High. Dennis Felton guided the Bulldogs that season and became Williams’ primary recruiter.

But again, Williams chose to test the NBA Draft waters instead. He landed in the second round of the ’05 draft at No. 45 overall to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Williams would’ve needed to go the college route if he played in today’s CBB era. College basketball became a one-and-done environment with high-profile freshmen leaping to the NBA after one season.

Hurley is arguably the biggest star for this Huskies team. He’s established a reputation as a zany but edgy head coach with two national title rings in tow.

Hurley can match school history if his Huskies stun the favored Wolverines. He’ll join Calhoun as the only UConn men’s basketball head coaches to win three championships.
