Liverpool vs Fulham predictions and betting tips – More struggles for the Reds?

Liverpool were dealt another bout of disappointment in midweek, as they lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Next up is a home game against Fulham in the Premier League.

The Reds still have work to do in their bid for a top-five finish, so this is an important encounter for Arne Slot’s side. Will Liverpool do what they need to do?

Liverpool vs Fulham predictions

It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Premier League had earned a fifth qualification berth for next season’s Champions League. That was the only positive piece of Europe-related news for Liverpool this week.

There were certainly few notes of optimism at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Liverpool were second best to Paris Saint-Germain in all departments. A 2-0 defeat arguably flattered the visitors to the French capital.

Liverpool have it all to do in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final. They have overturned first-leg deficits in dramatic fashion in the past, but this team will struggle to do so regardless of the Anfield factor.

The Reds are stuck in a rut. They have lost three games in a row in three different competitions. Four of their last six matches have ended in defeat, with Liverpool emerging victorious just once in that time.

Even with an extra place available, there is no guarantee that Liverpool will be in the Champions League next term. They occupy a position in the top five for now, but sixth-placed Chelsea are only a point behind them.

Granted, the Blues have not exactly been pulling up trees of late either, but Liverpool do not have any sort of momentum behind them. Of the last nine points available, the champions have collected just one.

Liverpool are now out of the FA Cup and on the verge of exiting the Champions League too. In all likelihood, the Premier League will soon have their full attention.

Perhaps that will finally spark this team into life. More likely is that Liverpool will either miss out on the top five, or limp over the line unconvincingly.

Make no mistake, Slot is fighting for his job. Liverpool’s problems are far from his doing alone. Their main issue this season is the impact of an ill-advised recruitment drive last summer, a development which affected the balance of the squad. Diogo Jota’s passing should not be underestimated either.

Yet it is hard to imagine Slot surviving beyond this campaign unless Liverpool can, at the very least, secure a top-five finish.

Slot shifted to a back five against PSG on Wednesday, but we will see a return to a defensive line of four for the visit of Fulham this weekend.

Liverpool need to respond after a disappointing last few weeks, yet this looks like a potential banana skin.

Liverpool vs Fulham betting tips

Liverpool return to Premier League action against Fulham at Anfield this weekend.

Fulham can get something

Fulham are one of several sides in the mix for European football. With eight Premier League teams likely to qualify for continental competition, Marco Silva’s side have something to aim for.

Fulham are ninth at present, just two points behind Brentford and Everton above them. Given those two teams will face off this weekend, Fulham would climb into the European places with a victory at Anfield.

That will not be easy, even amid Liverpool’s current struggles. Fulham have only won in the red half of Merseyside once since 2012.

But Silva’s team have only lost one of their last five top-flight fixtures. The west Londoners can avoid defeat by Liverpool on Saturday.

To-and-fro game in store

Fulham are a tidy team. They are very well coached by Silva, who is bound to attract the interest of bigger clubs this summer.

Fulham have enough technicians to be able to take the ball away from Liverpool at times on Saturday. The hosts will certainly not have everything their own way.

Liverpool have been vulnerable at the back for most of the campaign and Fulham have the tools to take advantage of those defensive deficiencies.

We anticipate goals at both ends in this one, so it is worth combining that bet with over 2.5 goals in total.

Szoboszlai to make impact

Dominik Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player this season, but he did not endear himself to the club’s supporters last weekend.

Szoboszlai was seen shrugging his shoulders and waving his arms at the away end at the Etihad Stadium after Liverpool’s 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Football fans have short memories, though, and Szoboszlai will be back in the good books of the Anfield faithful if he delivers the goods this weekend.

With the Hungary international set to continue in an advanced midfield role, there is a decent chance he will have a direct hand in at least one Liverpool goal.
