Liverpool plan to sign another midfielder next summer as £80m-rated Premier League star tipped

Liverpool will look to add another midfielder in the 2027 summer transfer window in what is a further blow to Alexis Mac Allister.

Mac Allister revealed that he has not been offered a new contract by the club with two years left on his current deal.

The 27-year-old penned a five-year deal when he joined from Brighton in 2023.

He has seen teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch extend their deals in the last year.

But Mac Allister’s options will likely be to leave next summer or run down his contract until 2028.

What did Mac Allister say?

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad,” said the 27-year-old.

“Everyone can see that I give my 100 per cent for this football club every single day in training and games. Of course, I can have very good games [and] bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it.

“At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine. Of course, there is still time.

“The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here.”

Liverpool’s transfer plan

talkSPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs revealed that Liverpool have plans to bring another midfielder into the club next summer.

This would push him further down Andoni Iraola’s pecking order.

He told White and Jordan: “My understanding is this Liverpool strategy is very different to other Premier League clubs, because when you get only two years left on your current contract, if you’re not going to offer a deal, the player tends to become available at the right price on the market.

“With two years left, you’re going to get the fee you’re looking for. One year left, you’re in a weaker position. 

“But Liverpool’s strategy, as with Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, whether the players stay or go, they’re prepared to get value on the existing deal and run that contract down. This is what is happening with Alexis Mac Allister.

“He would be open to a new deal. Manchester City had made an inquiry over the summer and were told the player was not for sale.

“But Liverpool’s perspective is that you have two different things at play. One is, are you going to renew? The other is, are you going to eke out every game and minute of the existing deal, even if the player leaves for less or even on a free transfer? 

“At the moment, Liverpool’s plan is to add a midfielder in Mac Allister’s position in 2027. And if they do so, Mac Allister falls down the pecking order. 

“That’s why, at the moment, they’re not prepared to offer him a new deal, even though there is value for him, certainly between now and next summer.”

Liverpool to target Alex Scott?

Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy was asked if this would likely signal the end of his time at Anfield.

Murphy said: “Probably unless he has an amazing season. I think all teams evolve. In the club and the hierarchy and the management, what they do is they value different players differently in terms of what they want from them or what they think they can get from them.

“If they were really bothered about losing him, they’d get him a new deal. That’s as simple as that.”

He added: “Maybe they want Alex Scott?”

Bournemouth star Scott has a contract that runs until 2028 and the club value him at around £80m.

The Cherries rejected a £64m bid from Chelsea earlier this summer and have made tying down his long-term future a priority.

talkSPORT verdict on Mac Allister

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan criticised Mac Allister for his public comments and insisted he would be best served doing his talking on the pitch.

Jordan told talkSPORT: “I think it’s weak. I think in life things change. Managers change. Circumstances change. What other players are getting is irrelevant.”

He added: “They say what they want and often they run around and say it when they’re on international breaks and they turn around and say it’s been lost in translation. 

“But they say what they want and they become more and more emboldened. That’s the nature of the economics that footballers are now paid because they’re on little islands on their own and you can’t control them for finances.

“He’d be best served getting on with being the best version of himself and forcing the Liverpool hierarchy to make a decision with him.

“That puts him back in the box seat because if he was in a box seat he would be holding Liverpool’s feet to the fire.”
