Grand National-winning trainer makes major Flat racing move after £3.5million purchase

Emmet Mullins is set to embark on a new challenge in his horse racing training career, after purchasing Jim Bolger’s Glebe House for £3.5million.

The Grand National-winning trainer stunned the world with a 50/1 victory from Noble Yeats, but is now set to focus more on the Flat.

Having such remarkable success over jumps with that horse in 2022, it’s a huge move to go into dual purpose training.

Mullins is also nephew to champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins.

The move prompts a significant change in course in Irish racing, that could see the Mullins family eventually dominate on both the Flat and jumps.

Mullins revealed to the Racing Post: “We will definitely be looking out for yearlings now with the view to hitting the ground early with two-year-olds.

“We’re going to be more Flat-orientated from now on.”

Mullins won’t be bypassing jumps racing all together as they plan for the upcoming 2026/27 National Hunt season, while they continue to develop operations at Glebe House.

The 36-year-old trainer is broadening horizons with this purchase of the training establishment based in Coolcullen in County Kilkenny.

After that historic 50/1 victory in the Grand National, Mullins has continued to add to his jumps racing accolades.

Including another stamina-testing race this year winning the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse with Soldier In Milan.

Historic Glebe House

Glebe House is a significant purchase having been around since 1982 with Bolger, who managed to wrack up more than 2,900 winners from the stable.

Those include Group One successes and as many as 13 Classics.

It was notably put up for sale earlier this year and will now be another base of operations for an entirely new discipline for a trainer looking to branch out.

Mullins explained: “It has world-renowned gallops, it’s been producing great results for decades, and it has built into a serious operation.

“It’s not very often something like this comes to the table, and I’m delighted to get it – fingers crossed we can make a good stab at it.”

He added: “We’re operating 45 stables currently, and to have access to so many more will be exciting.

“We’ll have to make use of them, and it’s a big kick up the backside to drive on and take that next step.”
