Of course SEC isn’t going to go ‘bananas’ and expel LSU
LSU started the season with a 51-10 win over Clemson and did not use its former NFL players in the process. Regardless, the SEC has not been happy about how LSU has approached the potential of NFL players returning. This has led to the SEC filing a lawsuit against LSU and could potentially expel the university from the conference.
As the hearing between the SEC and LSU gets closer, as well as a vote to potentially expel LSU, Pete Thamel of ESPN is breaking down what is going to happen.
“Today at one o’clock in Birmingham, Alabama, there is a federal court hearing where the SEC is essentially asking for its First Amendment rights to enforce its own rules. Within that filing, Greeny, they made it very clear that on Thursday, i.e., tomorrow, the SEC’s president, chancellors, are going to meet to discuss throwing LSU, expelling LSU, from the league,” Thamel said. “The expectation is they are not going to throw LSU from the league, but the fact that Greg Sankey testified for three hours in a state court hearing- that was a player eligibility hearing that didn’t directly involve LSU, but two of the players were certainly trying to go there. So now, the possibiltiy is at very least on the table, and it’s bananas, quite frankley Greeny, that the possibility is on the table, but its right there in the federal court filing yesterday.”
The SEC was established in 1932 by 13 members of the Southern Conference. Of the 13 charter members, three have since left the conference. Sewanee left in 1940, while Georgia Tech left in 1964, and Tulane in 1966. All three did so voluntarily. Ten of the 13 members remain in the conference, including LSU.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has called for the two sides to move forward from this incident, but until a final vote is held, the situation will still be hanging over Lane Kiffin and LSU.
