Lions hire failed ex-Dolphins GM

With the new season still three months away, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell said he is already eager to get into training camp and figure out the on-field issues they need to address.

Campbell recently downplayed the importance of their OTAs, describing them as a “pajama party.”

The Lions failed to qualify for the playoffs last season after tallying a 9-8 record. The team has only been to the playoffs three times in the last 10 years.

The Lions are trying to get more organized, hiring former general manager Chris Grier as a personnel executive, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Other details were not disclosed.

Grier served as general manager of the Miami Dolphins from 2016 to 2025. He was fired in October. He was the fourth-longest-serving general manager in franchise history behind Eddie Jones, Mike Robbie, and Don Shula.

The Dolphins, however, did not have much success under Grier’s watch, making it to the playoffs just three times in 10 years, similar to, incidentally, the Lions.

Miami had three coaches in that span—Adam Gase, Brian Flores, and Mike McDaniel, who was axed in January.

The 56-year-old Grier showed interest in Campbell as the Dolphins’ coach in 2016 after calling the shots on an interim basis in 2015, logging a 5-7 record. Grier, however, went with Gase.

Grier’s best moves in Miami were selecting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 pick in 2020 and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and linebacker Jaelan Phillips with the No. 6 pick and the No. 18 pick, respectively, in 2021.

Grier started as a scout for the New England Patriots in 1995.

The Lions will open their new campaign against the New Orleans Saints.
