Dodgers make intriguing roster promotion that may impact Tommy Edman

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly promoting infielder Alex Freeland, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. With rosters expanding in September, LA made the decision to add some more depth to the big league roster. Jack Harris of the California Post later explained how the Freeland promotion may impact the versatile Tommy Edman.

“While he doesn’t directly help their struggling outfield, it could allow team to play Tommy Edman out there more often,” Harris wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Edman is an impactful player for this Dodgers ball club. While Edman dealt with an injury earlier in the season, he has made a significant impact since returning. The 31-year-old is hitting .260/.341/.397 across 60 games played. Additionally, Edman can play second base, shortstop and in the outfield.

Meanwhile, Freeland is a versatile infielder. He can play second or third base as well as shortstop. Promoting Freeland gives the Dodgers additional flexibility to move Edman to the outfield at times. Manager Dave Roberts can be creative when it comes to the lineup with both Edman and Freeland on the MLB roster.

The Dodgers have not played their best baseball in recent action. LA was swept by the Atlanta Braves in a series last week. The Dodgers bounced back with a 2-1 series victory over the Detroit Tigers this past weekend, but they are still searching for more overall consistency. This ball club expects to be better.

On Tuesday night, Los Angeles will begin a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.
