Raiders beat out 4 teams for ex-49ers CB on waiver wire

The Las Vegas Raiders are among the many NFL teams currently making last-minute cuts and additions to their roster ahead of the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Raiders aren’t necessarily expected to be very competitive this year, but are still looking to take a step forward after last season’s disaster.

On Monday, the team made a big addition to their defensive backfield on the waiver wire, adding former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter.

Now, more information has come out on how competitive the battle was to bring in the talented defensive back.

“As it turns out, Darrell Luter had by far the most interested teams on the waiver wire yesterday: the Titans, Dolphins, Cowboys and Colts all attempted to claim him. The Raiders had priority. No other player waived over the weekend had more than 2 teams put a claim in,” reported Field Yates of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.

It was certainly a big get for the Raiders, who saw their defensive backfield shredded by opposing quarterbacks on a routine basis last year.

Luter is a former fifth-round pick of the 49ers back in 2023, and clearly, teams around the NFL are still high on his potential as a playmaker at the highest level.

Meanwhile, the Raiders will have a good chance to start out strong this year, with two of their first three games coming against the lowly Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints.

Kirk Cousins will likely be the team’s starting quarterback coming out of the gate, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see number one overall pick Fernando Mendoza assume that role at some point this season.

The Raiders’ contest vs the Dolphins is slated for September 13.
