Lakers rumors: Insider reveals potential ‘odd man out’ in attempts to bolster roster

The Los Angeles Lakers are trying to build a championship contending roster around Luka Doncic. Los Angeles is currently deciding how it wants to operate and whether or not it will be able to keep specific players this offseason. The Lakers could be an over-the-cap team, but that is a decision they will need to make. If they want to avoid going in that direction, there could end up being an odd man out on the roster. Dave McMenamin of ESPN recently reported that sources said Rui Hachimura could be the odd man out.

“Several league sources told ESPN they believe Hachimura could be the odd man out and that he might need to explore the market to find a desired deal,” McMenamin wrote in a recent article.

Hachimura, 28, averaged 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per outing during the 2025-26 season. After beginning his career with the Washington Wizards, Hachimura joined the Lakers during the 2022-23 campaign. He is now set to become an unrestricted free agent. Hachimura may be able to find a better deal elsewhere depending on how the Lakers decide to operate this offseason.

Both Hachimura and the Lakers have decisions to make. Losing Hachimura in NBA free agency would be far from ideal for the Lakers, as he played a crucial role this past season. One has to imagine LA has interest in bringing him back, but the salary cap could prove to be an obstacle.

Lakers fans will want to closely monitor Rui Hachimura’s upcoming free agency as the offseason moves forward.
