Knicks fans will be amused by Sean Sweeney’s ‘bad luck’ reason for Spurs blowing NBA Finals
The New York Knicks won the NBA Finals fair and square over the San Antonio Spurs. The series ended after just five games, largely because of Jalen Brunson’s clutch gene, OG Anunoby’s physicality, and Karl-Anthony Towns’ willingness to step up and play hard against Victor Wembanyama.
While the outcome signals a blowout, the championship series was far from that. The Spurs often led late throughout the series, just to give up leads in the fourth quarter. While New York’s championship acumen should be credited for these comebacks, former Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney pinned the series loss on bad luck.
“One, I think there’s a little attrition having to go through the previous series. Two, bad luck,” Sweeney said on The Ryen Russillo Show. “They told me if the games were like 46 minutes or whatever, we would have won 4-1. Jalen obviously had a monster game in that last one. You know, [I] coached him in Dallas, like happy for him, kind of. But like, I think there’s some of that. And I think we just made more mistakes than we made in the previous series. And you could maybe say some youth to that, but like, you don’t do what you did and just all of a sudden become young.”
Sweeney recently became the head coach of the Orlando Magic. While it is fair to blame youth as a reason his former team lost in the NBA Finals, it doesn’t make sense to say bad luck was the cause. After all, NBA games are played for 48 minutes, not 46.
