James Dolan jokingly asked Knicks to ‘avoid fornication’ during playoffs
On Saturday evening, the New York Knicks ended their 53-year championship drought with a Game 5 win over the San Antonio Spurs on the road in the NBA Finals. This game followed a similar script to the Knicks’ other wins in this series, with the team falling behind by double digits early but battling back and making all the clutch plays down the stretch to win.
The Knicks now sit atop the NBA mountain, and one person who was thrilled about the accomplishment was New York team owner James Dolan, who reportedly wanted the players to go to great lengths to accomplish their dream.
Ian Begley of SNY reported that Dolan “jokingly asked the players to avoid fornication during the postseason. Dolan also told the players to work through any issues with direct conversations, rather than passive-aggressive comments to the media.”
Whatever strategy the Knicks players followed, it certainly paid dividends during this playoff run. New York fell behind 2-1 in their first round series against the Atlanta Hawks, but ended up going 15-1 from that point on, with their only loss coming in Game 3 of the Finals against the Spurs.
Through it all, the Knicks reached a peak level of play that not many fans or pundits thought they had in them, with Jalen Brunson playing like one of the best point guards in the league, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges providing the versatility on defense and shotmaking on offense that New York gave up so much to bring in, and Karl-Anthony Towns leveling up his defense while remaining a matchup nightmare on offense.
The Knicks can now take a sigh of relief that their dream has been accomplished, and will have a few days to gear up for the parade, which is set for Thursday in Manhattan.
