Yankees rumors: New York among Adley Rutschman trade suitors

It has not been a secret that the New York Yankees are looking to shore up their catcher position heading into the 2026 MLB trade deadline.

Amid their trade pursuit for a new backstop, the Yankees also seemingly did not have to go beyond their division to check on one, with MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post reporting that New York has kicked the tires on Baltimore Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman.

“Yankees are among many teams to check on 3-time All-Star/switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman. NYY is casting a wide net for catching need. Ryan Jeffers, pending free agent, seemed logical but Twins suggest they’re a buyer now. Tyler Stephenson, others are on NYY list,” Heyman wrote in a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

The 28-year-old Rutschman would be quite an addition to the Yankees if such a trade pushed through. Entering Wednesday, the Yankees have a catcher wOBA of .246 and 54 wRC+ (both second-worst in the big leagues). J.C. Escarra, Austin Wells and Ali Sánchez are simply not cutting it with their bats, and someone like Rutschman would be a huge shot in the arm for the Yankees.

The three-time MLB All-Star Rutschman is on the 10-day injured list with a wrist issue, but it does not seem to be an issue that will last for the remainder of the campaign. On the season, he is batting .251/.331/.433 with eight home runs. He signed a one-year deal worth $7.25 million with the Orioles in January to avoid arbitration, but he has one more year left of arbitration eligibility before becoming a free agent in 2027.
