The Irish Open betting preview

Twelve months ago, Rory McIlroy rocked up to the Irish Open struggling for form and motivation. 

He needed something to jolt him into action, and a home Open seemed just the thing. 

Coming to the final hole, he needed an eagle to catch the tournament leader. 

His approach shot at the par-5 18th at The K Club found the putting surface and, when the putt that followed dropped in the hole, the delirious scenes among the galleries were replayed a million times over the week that followed.

He still hadn’t actually won, but he achieved that in extra holes, and now he heads to the west coast of Ireland to defend his title at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel – better known to everyone as Doonbeg. 

It’s a relatively new course that was originally designed by Greg Norman before it had a complete overhaul by Martin Hawtree (a regular renovator for both Trump and the R&A). 

Expect dramatic scenery, changeable weather, more Rory McIlroy love from the galleries, and an appearance from President Donald Trump at some stage in the week. 

It promises to be a wild week, but who is worth a bet? Let’s find out.

The Irish Open betting tips

Here are some key betting tips and insights for the Irish Open 2026.

Jon Rahm win

Rory McIlroy has won the Irish Open twice and both times at The K Club. He did lose a playoff at Royal County Down in 2024, but his links efforts have tended to disappoint. 

Jon Rahm, on the other hand, has an exceptional record on linksland in the Irish Open.

He won at Portstewart in 2017, was fourth at Ballyliffin in 2018, and won again at Lahinch in 2019. 

Those last two efforts were also on the west coast, as Doonbeg is this week. 

The Spaniard enjoys the rugged territory and, with LIV Golf’s future in turmoil, a statement win is not out of the question.

Rasmus Neergaard Petersen each way

If links form is any guide – and it ought to be – the Dane has interesting claims having finished T9 in the Open at Royal Birkdale and T36 the week before in the Scottish Open (when he was only three shots off the 54 hole lead).

And while Jumeirah is a very different golf course to Doonbeg, it was designed by Norman and Neergaard Petersen was third there last November.

He’s also a winner this season – at Royal Melbourne in December – which is another good sign.

The problem is his poor form: four straight missed cuts.

If, however, the linksland revives him, this price could look very big.

Shaun Norris Top 20

The South African’s victory bid in the Nexo Championship, at Trump Aberdeen last month, was cruelly disrupted by a peculiar penalty when he kicked away a divot from beneath his stance. 

It was perceived to have been repaired, so he was improving his lie. 

He ultimately finished T7, but that’s a good pointer for this week (being both another links course), as was his T2 in the Spanish Open at El Prat (another Norman design). 

He has six top 20s from 14 starts this season and can land another this week.
