Hurricanes’ Rod Brind’Amour opens up about viral exchange with Flyers’ Rick Tocchet
The Carolina Hurricanes, led by head coach Rod Brind’Amour, became the first NHL team since the mid-1980’s to sweep their way through the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Hurricanes now await the winner of the ongoing series between the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens after sweeping both the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers in their respective first two series.
Following their series sweep over the Flyers, Brind’Amour went viral on social media for his warm exchange in the postgame handshake line with Flyers coach Rick Tocchet, who, like Brind’Amour, is also a former NHL player who spent time playing in Philadelphia.
Now, Brind’Amour is shedding some light on the exchange, saying that he appreciates what Tocchet did for the Flyers in his first year behind the bench and taking them back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2020.
“You could hear the crowd was appreciative of their effort,” Brind’Amour said via Walt Ruff on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I was happy for (Rick Tocchet) for doing that, and those people. That’s a great hockey town.”
The crowd that remained behind at Xfinity Mobile Arena chanted loudly, “Let’s go Flyers!” during the handshake line, clearly appreciative of bringing playoff hockey back to town for the first time in years.
Tocchet, who won the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL’s Coach of the Year while with the Vancouver Canucks in 2023-24, guided the Flyers to a 43-27-12 record this season, along with a first-round series victory over the in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins.
