Hurricanes hit historic level with Game 3 OT win vs. Canadiens

The Carolina Hurricanes now have a 2-1 series lead over the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Finals. After a scoreless third period, the game went to overtime, where Andrei Svechnikov won the game for the Hurricanes.

It was the fifth time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs that the Carolina Hurricanes have won in overtime, and also placed their team in historic company, according to ESPN Insights.

“The Hurricanes become the 4th team in NHL history to win each of their first 5 overtime games in a single postseason. They join the 2023 Panthers (7 GP), 2003 Mighty Ducks (7 GP) and 2011 Sharks (5 GP),” the post on X, formerly Twitter, read.

The Hurricanes took a double overtime victory in Game 2 of their first-round series against the Ottawa Senators. They then won both Games 2 and 4 against the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime. Both wins in this series against the Canadiens have also been in overtime. The only loss of the playoffs for the Hurricanes came in the first game of this series, but it was not in overtime.

The 2010-11 San Jose Sharks are the only team to win their first five overtime games in the postseason and not make it to the Stanley Cup Final. Their five overtime wins all came in the first two rounds, and their first overtime loss came in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals against the Vancouver Canucks, which ended their playoff run.

The 2002-03 Anaheim Mighty Ducks made it to the Stanley Cup Final. Their seven overtime victories included two in the Stanley Cup Final, plus a five overtime win over the Dallas Stars and a double-overtime win over the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference Finals. They would fall in seven games to the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The 2022-23 Florida Panthers took six overtime wins in the first three rounds of the playoffs, including two in the first round against the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Boston Bruins. They also won an overtime game in the Stanley Cup Finals, but it was the only victory of the series as they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Hurricanes will look to take a 3-1 series lead in Game 4 against the Canadiens on Wednesday.
