The San Antonio Spurs are already winning with Victor Wembanyama, and the Los Angeles Lakers may have accidentally helped make him even scarier. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Wembanyama’s agent reached out to Lakers GM Rob Pelinka last year searching for insight on how to maximize the young superstar’s rare potential. What followed may eventually haunt LA for years.

Wembanyama’s agent, Bouna Ndiaye, wanted insight into how Kobe Bryant pushed himself beyond normal limits. Pelinka knew those stories better than anyone. He told Ndiaye about the Lakers legend studying great white sharks to sharpen his defensive instincts. He even recalled Kobe privately touring the Sistine Chapel to better understand greatness under impossible conditions, and those conversations clearly stuck with Wembanyama’s camp.

“I wanted to understand how Kobe did things,” Ndiaye told ESPN. “So that we could learn from him.”

That Lakers mindset eventually became part of the foundation behind Victor Wembanyama’s now-famous Shaolin Temple retreat in China. The goal was not simply strength training. It was transformation: mental, physical, spiritual, everything.

Lakers may regret helping Victor Wembanyama evolve

The scary part for the rest of the NBA is how perfectly all of this fits Victor Wembanyama. After all, the Spurs superstar already plays with unusual discipline and curiosity. Now, however, he is actively searching for ways to evolve that most players would never consider under the bright arena lights.

To be clear, Pelinka never directly told Wembanyama to train with Shaolin monks. Still, the philosophical blueprint clearly mattered. Bryant constantly searched for unconventional edges, and now Wembanyama appears to be following that same path.

Naturally, that should terrify the Lakers and the rest of the Western Conference.

The Spurs already believe they have a generational superstar. But if Wembanyama truly unlocks another level physically while keeping his mobility and creativity intact, then the NBA could be dealing with something much bigger.

Ironically enough, Lakers executive Rob Pelinka may have helped point him there in the first place.
