Hornets’ dream seeding, matchup scenarios for 2026 NBA Playoffs
The end of the 2025-26 NBA regular season is almost upon us, and the Charlotte Hornets, at present, are sitting in a play-in tournament spot. This would be a major success in and of itself for the Hornets considering how poor their start to the campaign was, but they’re not exactly going to be content with not qualifying for the playoffs after being one of the best teams in the NBA since the start of the new year.
There remains a very real possibility that the Hornets end up not qualifying for the playoffs at all, as they can still drop as far as 10th if the Miami Heat win out (they lost the season series to Miami, 3-1). But the good news is that the Hornets can still climb as far as fifth in the standings, as they own relevant tiebreakers over the Toronto Raptors, Atlanta Hawks, and Orlando Magic.
However, the final few games of the 2025-26 season are far from a cakewalk for the Hornets, finishing the season against the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks. But of course, the Hornets can still dream about achieving bigger and better things.
With that said, this is the Hornets’ dream seeding scenario heading into the 2026 NBA playoffs.
Hornets’ dream scenario: qualify outright for playoffs, face Knicks in Round 1

Facing a reigning Eastern Conference Finalist doesn’t exactly sound like a dream for a young, upstart Hornets team. But getting to the playoffs first has to be priority number one for Charlotte.
Being in the play-in tournament just invites so much uncertainty and risk, and while the Hornets have proven to be up to the task at every turn ever since turning their season around, ending up where they are at the time of writing (in ninth place) makes it so that they need to win two games just to qualify as the eighth seed, booking a matchup against the Detroit Pistons.
If the Hornets were to end up in ninth, they would have to overcome the Miami Heat just to get another crack at the eighth seed, and facing the Heat in the play-in setting is far from ideal. After all, the Heat have qualified for the playoffs via the play-in tournament for three consecutive seasons, and they’ve taken three out of four over the Hornets this season alone.
That is the nightmare scenario for the Hornets. But as mentioned earlier, they can still climb up to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings provided that both the Raptors and Hawks lose out and the Magic and 76ers win just one of their two final games. However, should the Hornets climb to fifth, what awaits them is a matchup against the Cavs.
The good news for the Hornets is that the Cavs, a team that’s gone 3-1 over them this season, aren’t locked into the fourth seed quite yet. Should the Knicks lose out and the Cavs win their final two games of the season, Cleveland would climb to third and New York would fall to fourth. The ideal situation for the Hornets is to climb as high as fifth and for the Knicks to fall to fourth.
What makes a matchup against the Knicks more manageable for the Hornets is that they have more defensive weak spots to punish. Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson can have their defensive question marks, while Mitchell Robinson, despite being a problem on the offensive glass, has a glaring weakness at the charity stripe.
The Hornets showed in their most recent matchup against the Knicks (a 114-103 win for Charlotte) that they have serious counters against New York. LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Kon Knueppel are an excellent young trio who are ready to pop off on the big stage, Moussa Diabate is relentless on the glass, and they have gritty players coming off the bench who can give them the necessary push when things stall.
Charlotte dominated New York on the glass during their most recent clash, and that’s even with Robinson playing 26 minutes on the night (four more than Towns did). That is going to be the key for the Hornets should these two teams actually meet in the playoffs.
Now, it’s unlikely that this matchup actually comes to fruition. There are so many things that have to go right for the Hornets to end up with this exact scenario. But this is the stuff dreams are made of. It would be quite the successfully incredible season should Charlotte make it to the playoffs, let alone the second round, and this matchup could make things easier for the Hornets.
