Heat totally stiffed by ESPN experts in Eastern Conference title predictions

The Miami Heat dramatically reshaped their championship outlook during a blockbuster offseason, but ESPN’s NBA experts apparently remain unconvinced.

In ESPN’s latest predictions for the 2026-27 season, a collective of insiders ranked six teams as the most likely to win the Eastern Conference finals. Miami did not receive enough support to appear on the list despite acquiring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks and constructing a new-look roster around the superstar.

The reigning NBA champion New York Knicks comfortably led ESPN’s voting with 68 points. The Philadelphia 76ers followed with 51 after their own aggressive offseason, while the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons tied for third with 17 points apiece.

The Indiana Pacers received 12 points, and the Cleveland Cavaliers rounded out the rankings with nine.

Miami’s omission stood out enough for ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill to specifically acknowledge it.

“Not mentioned: the Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Miami Heat. Interesting as well,” Goodwill wrote.

ESPN’s experts instead projected New York and Philadelphia as the conference’s two leading contenders. The Knicks enter the season attempting to defend their NBA championship, while the 76ers have transformed their roster by acquiring LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.

“The Knicks and 76ers will vie for a spot in the NBA Finals, according to our forecast, a year after the two teams met in a second-round series, which New York won handily in four games,” Goodwill wrote.

Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Heat overlooked in crowded East

Miami’s absence comes after an offseason that significantly changed the franchise’s trajectory.

The Heat acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. from Milwaukee in a blockbuster that sent Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and a collection of draft assets to the Bucks.

Antetokounmpo immediately gives Miami one of the league’s most dominant players to pair with Bam Adebayo. The Heat have continued filling out their roster around the two stars, including the recent signing of five-time All-Star Klay Thompson after his buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Eastern Conference, however, offers no shortage of competition.

Detroit finished last season with the conference’s best regular-season record before falling to Cleveland in the second round. Boston posted the East’s second-best record but surrendered a 3-1 series lead against Philadelphia in the opening round.

Miami faces pressure to turn offseason buzz into results

ESPN also identified Indiana as a potential sleeper following Tyrese Haliburton’s return from the right Achilles tear he suffered during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals.

“When Indiana was whole, it defeated the Knicks in the playoffs in 2024 and 2025,” Goodwill wrote.

Cleveland also received consideration after reaching the conference finals last season.

Still, leaving Miami outside the top six represents one of the more surprising aspects of ESPN’s forecast. Antetokounmpo remains a two-time MVP, former Defensive Player of the Year and NBA champion, while Adebayo gives the Heat another established two-way star.

Miami still needs to prove its rebuilt roster can translate its offseason additions into postseason success. The Heat missed the playoffs last season and must integrate several new pieces around Antetokounmpo.

ESPN’s experts nevertheless appear to believe New York, Philadelphia and several other Eastern Conference contenders enter the season with stronger championship cases.

For a Heat team that generated significant attention throughout the offseason, the lack of confidence provides an early reminder that Miami’s new roster will have to earn its place among the East’s elite.
