Enes Kanter Freedom insists he’s a woman after Sky game stunt, WNBA ineligibility ruling

After his controversial appearance at the Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever game and ineligibility ruling for the WNBA Draft, Enes Kanter Freedom has insisted that he’s a woman.

Appearing on Fox News, Kanter Freedom was adamant that he is a “woman,” meaning that he “should be allowed to play” in the WNBA.

“Article 13 Section 1 says if you identify as a woman, then you are [allowed] to play,” he reasoned. “I identify as a woman, sure, yes, so I can play.”

He then said that he is “just following the rules” that are in place. Kanter Freedom claimed that he would be willing to “respect” the WNBA if they change the rules, but as of now, he feels he “should be allowed to play.”

Enes Kanter Freedom’s recent WNBA controversies

On Aug. 7, 2026, Kanter Freedom declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft. He was challenging the support of transgender women in the league, claiming he met the eligibility guidelines through self-identification. Royce White would follow suit and also announce his candidacy to play women’s basketball.

A few weeks later, Kanter Freedom attended the Sky and Fever game on Aug. 23. He wore a shirt that featured the definition of a woman. He would be removed from the game following a verbal exchange with the Sky’s Natasha Cloud.

It appears he is not done yet, after his appearance on Fox News. The WNBA reportedly will not allow him and White to be eligible for the 2027 Draft, which will be held in April.

Kanter Freedom was the third overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. During his NBA career, he played for the Utah Jazz, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the New York Knicks, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Boston Celtics. In addition to his basketball career, he has been an outspoken human rights activist.
