Harrison Smith lands $12.25M million contract to return to Vikings

Vikings fans were waiting for the longest time to hear the news that long-time Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith had played his last game and decided to retire. The announcement didn’t come in the offseason nor in training camp, but with little more than a week to go before the Vikings open the season at home against the archrival Green Bay Packers, Smith has come to an agreement with the team to play one more season.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Smith will be paid $12.25 million to return to the Vikings secondary. He also has incentives that could raise his pay to as much as $16.25 million for the upcoming season. Harrison is returning for his 15th season with the Vikings. He was a first-round pick by Minnesota in the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Vikings appeared to have a need in their secondary after recent signee Jamal Adams suffered a torn quad. The 37-year-old Smith has not only had a stellar career with the Vikings that has seen him earn Pro Bowl honors six times, he is also an ideal player for Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

Smith and Flores have an excellent rapport. The defensive back understands where he is supposed to line up on an every-down basis, and he can also line up his fellow secondary members correctly. That makes him something of a coach on the field for the Vikings.

Smith may have slowed by a step since his prime years, but he had 54 tackles, 2 interceptions, 11 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery last season.
