Diamondbacks make Corbin Carroll decision amid All-Star’s recent slump

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in a fight for a playoff spot in the National League. While the Diamondbacks have had multiple ups and downs throughout the season, they are currently holding onto the No. 3 Wild Card spot with a 74-68 record.

That has given them a 3.0-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Torey Lovullo would like to see his team show off a bit more consistency with 20 games remaining in the regular season since the Diamondbacks are just 5-5 in their last 10 games.

The Diamondbacks are facing the Houston Astros Saturday night, and Lovullo has made a change in his usual lineup. All-Star Corbin Carroll normally bats in the No. 2 position for the Diamondbacks, but he has been in a brutal slump. As a result, Lovullo has moved him down to fifth in the Arizona lineup.

In many ways, that not much of a demotion. The No. 2 spot is regularly looked at as one of the most — if not the most — important spot in the modern lineup. The No. 5 spot is regarded as a key RBI position by most observers.

Lovullo made the move because Carroll is just 1 for 23 in his last 6 games. That hit was a single, and he has not hit a home run since August 28 when he drove the ball over the fence in a 10-6 triumph over the San Francisco Giants.

Carroll is slashing .239/.335/.466 this season. He has hit 19 home runs and driven in 61 runs, but he has also been an extra-base machine with 28 doubles and a National League-leading 15 triples.
