The cause of Clarke’s death remains unknown. Authorities are investigating his death as drug-induced. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to an emergency call where they found Clarke unconscious in his home in the San Fernando Valley. Authorities said they found drug paraphernalia, a sign of a possible overdose.
After his passing, tributes poured in from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and his Grizzlies teammates.
Clark was born in Vancouver, Canada, on September 19, 1996.
In 2019, Clarke was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the 21st overall pick in the first round of the NBA Draft. Immediately after, he was traded to the Grizzlies. In 2020, Clark made the NBA All-Rookie team. He averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 60.5% from the field.
Along the way, Clarke, with Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., led Memphis to four playoff appearances. In 2022, they reached the Western Conference Semifinals. That same year, Clarke signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension.
In 2025, Clarke missed the remainder of the season with a PCL sprain in his right knee. He underwent surgery in September 2025, which delayed his return for the preseason. Altogether, Clarke played in two games during the 2025-26 season.
Off the court, Clarke launched the Brandon Clarke Foundation to help promote youth literacy.
