Grizzlies’ Cameron Boozer sends ‘shockingly good’ warning to rest of NBA
The Memphis Grizzlies underwent a massive rebuild over the recent years. They swapped out stars like Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane for a surplus of draft picks. Now, Cameron Boozer will be the face of the new era. The fifth freshman to ever win the national player of the year award was just drafted third overall by the Grizzlies, and he seems optimistic about the team’s immediate chances.
“We are a team who is going to really surprise people this year,” Boozer said in a recent interview on the Chris Vernon Show. “We are going to be shockingly good to people. I think people don’t really understand that just because obviously it was kind of a rebuild, but you look at the players we have, the roster [and] who were are bringing in this year, and I think we are going to have something pretty special.”

Boozer brings inside-outside scoring, a winning pedigree, and the intangibles to a Grizzlies team looking to get back into contention. In addition to Boozer, the Grizzlies added Karim Lopez with pick 21 and Richie Saunders with the 32nd overall pick. Lopez was the first Mexican-born player to be selected in the first round of the draft’s history.
The team still has some intriguing returning players, such as Ja Morant and Zach Edey, too. Morant has struggled with injury issues and off-the-court problems in recent years, but he was once viewed as a superstar and one of the future faces of the league. Edey also had injury problems last season, but he is a daunting interior force at 7-foot-4 who could pair well in Memphis’ frontcourt with Boozer.
The Western Conference is stacked, and returning to the playoffs won’t be easy for the Grizzlies, but winning has followed Boozer throughout his career.
