Giants’ Luis Arraez exits Orioles clash after head injury

San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez exited Saturday night’s 6-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth inning with a right wrist injury following an unusual sequence.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning when a ground ball off the bat of Leody Taveras forced Arraez to make a defensive play. Orioles baserunner Dylan Beavers attempted to avoid the ball but inadvertently made contact with Arraez’s throwing hand while jumping, resulting in runner’s interference being called. Arraez still completed the play and threw out Taveras at first base, though he was visibly in discomfort and immediately required medical attention.

Arraez initially remained in the game and even contributed defensively shortly after, but the discomfort persisted. He returned to the plate in the fifth inning and hit a single to right field, finishing the game 1-for-3. However, he was replaced by Christian Koss in the bottom half of the inning and did not return. Postgame evaluations confirmed a right wrist contusion, and X-rays came back negative, with his status listed as day-to-day.

The 29-year-old has been an essential contributor for San Francisco early in the season. Signed to a one-year, $12 million contract in the offseason, he has started all 15 games, primarily at second base, batting .304 with a 0.4 WAR, and helping a lineup that ranked tied for 24th in batting average in 2025. A three-time batting champion from 2022 to 2024, he owns a career .317 average and had his best season in 2023, hitting .354/.393/.469 with a 4.6 WAR.

On the field, Baltimore was led offensively by Jeremiah Jackson, who fell a triple short of the cycle after hitting a home run, double, and single. Gunnar Henderson went deep for a solo homer, his sixth of the season, while Coby Mayo drove in two runs. The Orioles’ bullpen combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

For the Giants, Heliot Ramos contributed two hits and drove in both runs, while Logan Webb (1-2) allowed four runs over six innings. San Francisco finished 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position, ending a three-game winning streak in which they had outscored opponents 17-3.

If Arraez misses time, the Giants have internal options at second base, including Casey Schmitt, who is batting .324 with an .865 OPS, and Christian Koss, who saw limited action this season after appearing in 47 games at the position this past season.
