Giants’ Buster Posey mentions Edwin Diaz in scathing clapback to critics

Suffice to say, the 2026 season has not been going according to plan for Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants. On Wednesday, the Giants fell to 20-30 on the season, close to dead last in the NL West, after suffering a 6-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. A litany of issues have arisen for the Giants this season, with their poor offense that is dead last in MLB in runs scored being their most pressing concern.

However, there are just so many deficiencies in this current Giants roster that Posey and company have to address moving forward. Another issue has been the lack of depth in the bullpen. The Giants’ late-game weapons have not been very good, with the team having abandoned their Ryan Walker at closer plan a few weeks ago.

Nonetheless, Posey was defiant in his response to critics saying that the Giants should have had a more concrete plan to address their bullpen woes.

“You probably wanted us to sign Edwin Diaz, but then you’d probably be asking me why I signed Edwin Diaz and he’s on the IL. Look, every decision that you make, we can play armchair quarterback on it and say it was good or bad. We got some guys on the bullpen that are doing really good stuff,” Posey said in a call with KNBR’s Brian Murphy.

“I don’t regret it. It’s my job to sit here and say, ‘Do we think the cost benefit of signing [a free agent closer] is worth it?’ And we didn’t see it.”

The bullpen does indeed raise glaring warning flags for the Giants to address. But this rot that seems to have permeated the roster goes deeper than their inability to address their relief corps. The offense has been substandard, and it will always be difficult to compete when a team’s weaknesses stand out as much as they do for this current San Francisco roster.

Posey is beloved among Giants fans for his contributions as a player. But his legacy as the team’s president of baseball operations is leaving a lot to be desired.
