Freddie Freeman’s brutally honest response to MLB possibly making huge draft change

The Los Angeles Dodgers can’t keep Freddie Freeman forever. LA will need to find someone who can deliver 2,500 career hits or more like Freeman in a future MLB Draft.

Yet Freeman and LA could see the draft change forever.

The MLB’s Amateur Draft before Saturday toyed with the idea of excluding high school talent and cutting the rounds to 12. This draft operates currently in a 20-round format and is big on plucking prep talent. The past star from El Modena High in Orange, California came via this draft.

Freeman placed the idea on blast via an interview with the California Post.

“I think maybe now the fans will start seeing that it’s just money,” Freeman said to Jack Harris of The Post. “Because that’s just cutting. It’s all about money.”

Freeman embraced his journey as a past high school talent who now owns multiple World Series titles.

“I loved coming out of high school,” he said. “It got me into the professional ranks. It got me into being able to develop into that organization and how they expect you to play. They believed in you at such a young age.”

That’s the sole purpose of having the amateur draft. Teams like the Dodgers can pluck the rising 17 or 18-year-old and work them into their system. The Atlanta Braves pulled this off in the second round of the 2007 draft, taking the Villa Park, California native during his prep run.

Freeman is nearing his 40s and still playing at a high level featuring his milestone hit. But surpassing the 2,500-hit mark would’ve never happened if it weren’t for the amateur draft.
