Former Ohio State star’s case is bad news for Brendan Sorsby

The Brendan Sorsby saga isn’t over just yet, as the star quarterback is expected to challenge the NFL’s decision to not hold a supplemental draft and, as a result, keep him out of the league in 2026.

Whether he will win that battle is another story. The league is clearly taking a stand against Sorsby and making an example out of him for gambling on football games, and it is using the decision to pull the supplemental draft as an avenue to punish Sorsby despite him not being in the league.

Now, Sorsby has some avenues to challenge this decision. Players like Terrelle Pryor and Josh Gordon were allowed into the supplemental draft after losing their NCAA eligibility for rules violations. However, the case of Maurice Clarett back in 2004 could be bad news for the Texas Tech quarterback. NFL insider Albert Breer went into more detail recently.

“The counter will be that the broad powers the NFL referenced having in its letter were collectively bargained,” Breer wrote. “And though Sorsby would likely argue that he isn’t yet part of the union that negotiated that provision, the league would have the precedent set in the Maurice Clarett case of 2004 to fall back on—Clarett was ruled subject to the CBA without being a member of the union back then.”

Clarett also violated NCAA rules, but he was attempting to enter the NFL Draft without being three years removed from high school. That made the choice easy for the NFL, but when he was ruled to be subject to the CBA, it opened the door for the league to do the same thing to Sorsby here.

In the end, it’s the NFL’s decision whether to hold the supplemental draft or not. And considering the severity of the violations that Sorsby committed, including gambling on games that his team was playing in, it makes sense that the NFL would want to make an example out of him.

Whether Sorsby wins his appeal remains to be seen, but it’s looking like he will have to stay on the sidelines for at least a year.
