Florida State football’s Mike Norvell defends proposed 24-team College Football Playoff

As the Florida State football program went through spring camp, the team is preparing to make some major noise for the 2026 season after back-to-back disappointing seasons. The Florida State football team will be led by head coach Mike Norvell, who recently gave his thoughts on the much-talked-about proposal to expand the College Football Playoff (CFP).

There have been talks of expanding the CFP to 24 teams, having already been expanded to 12; the committee is looking into growing, with many critics of the proposal. However, Norvell believes that “24 is a good number,” according to Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports.

“It would be a very competitive field being able to have some automatic (Power 4) qualifiers – whether it’s half (the field) & then some at large & Group of 6 options,” Norvell said.

Is Florida State football’s Mike Norvell on the hot seat?

It remains to be seen when the expansion talks come into fruition, as Norvell and the Seminoles are more focused on turning around the trajectory of the program. Some would even say that Norvell is on the hot seat after recent disappointment by the Florida State football team, as athletic director Michael Alford mentioned the communication the two share with one another.

“We have constant communication,” Alford said, via On3 Sports. “Every year, Mike and I are going to talk, we set expectations for the year, and we’re going to evaluate. I have a process, just like I do with all my coaches. We evaluate throughout the process.”

“We sit down at the end of the year, talk about the good and the bad, where we think we should be, where the resources are,” Alford continued. “And then lay out expectations. He has high expectations for this program. So do I, and so does everybody else. Those expectations and resources are there. So now we’ve just got to go and perform and win some games.”

At any rate, the Seminoles look to improve in the 2026 season after the team had a 5-7 record, going 2-6 in conference play.
